Fieldwork is the culmination of several years of natural colour research and experiments. The threads used to wrap the wooden blocks have all been coloured with handmade plant pigments, most of them either foraged or homegrown. They include coreopsis, birch bark, buckthorn berries, madder, Japanese indigo, alder cones, yarrow and bloodroot amongst others. The stripes of shifting colour and the arrangement of the wrapped wooden blocks reference land and field patterns, and suggest the geometries of planting and harvesting.
