Paper yarn making (Kami-ito) workshop
Learn the traditional Japanese craft of turning Japanese paper (washi) into yarn that can be used for weaving, stitching and other textile projects. Over the course of two days you’ll be provided with all the necessary materials and guided through the different steps of transforming flat sheets of paper into three-dimensional yarn.
Trained by Japanese expert and author of Kigami and Kami-ito: Japanese Handmade Paper and Paper Thread, Hiroko Karuno, I have spent two years perfecting this endangered heritage craft and will pass on all the knowledge and tips that I learned in Hiroko-san’s Kyoto studio.
Day 1:
Learn about the qualities of Japanese paper, how to fold the paper ready for cutting, cutting the paper, rolling the paper.
Day 2:
Turn the paper into a continuous yarn, spin the yarn on a Japanese spinning wheel, finish the yarn and wind skeins.
Price for two day workshop £400. Making paper yarn is a lengthy process with many different steps which all take time to master. To make sure I can give students close and detailed attention at all stages, the workshop is only available on either a one-to-one basis or for two people maximum.
